10.6 Cliffs and wave cut platforms Flashcards
(3 cards)
1
Q
What are the different types of erosional features on the coast
A
Wave-cut platforms
Caves, arches, stacks and stumps
2
Q
Explain the formation of a wave-cut notch and wave-cut platform
A
- the waves attack the base of the cliff through the processes of abrasion, corrosion and hydraulic action
- over time the cliff will be undercut and a wave-cut notch is formed
- the wave-cut notch leaves an area above the cliff unsupported. This is known as an overhang
- eventually the overhand becomes unstable and collapses. Further cliff retreat will form a wave-cut platform
- at low tide the wave-cut platform is visible
3
Q
Outline the characteristics of a wave-cut platform
A
- generally only visible at low tide
- slopes gently down to the sea at an angle of 3-4 degrees
