Q

Explain the formation of a wave-cut notch and wave-cut platform

A
  • the waves attack the base of the cliff through the processes of abrasion, corrosion and hydraulic action
  • over time the cliff will be undercut and a wave-cut notch is formed
  • the wave-cut notch leaves an area above the cliff unsupported. This is known as an overhang
  • eventually the overhand becomes unstable and collapses. Further cliff retreat will form a wave-cut platform
  • at low tide the wave-cut platform is visible
