4.3.1.2 Changes of State Flashcards

1
Q

What happens when you heat a solid?

A

if you heat solid, you increase its internal energy and at some point the solid can turn into a liquid (melting)

Q

What happens when you heat a liquid?

A

if you continue to heat the liquid again the internal energy will continue to increase then at some point the liquid will turn into a gas (boiling)

Q

What happens when you cool a gas?

A

if you cool a gas down then the internal energy would reduce and then at some point the gas would turn back into a liquid (condensation)

Q

What happens when you cool a liquid?

A

if you cool the liquid down further then the internal energy would reduce even more and then eventually the liquid would turn into a solid (freezing/solidification)

Q

Evaporation:

A

when a liquid turns to a gas but only on the surface of a liquid (as only particles on surface have enough E to turn into gas)

Q

Are changes of state physical or chemical changes?

A

physical changes which differ from chemical changes as the material recovers its original properties if the change is reversed
