Topic 6 - Geographical investigations Flashcards
What are the channel characteristics that you are measuring in the river?
Velocity
Depth
Width
Where is River Tillingbourne located?
The River Tillingbourne runs along the south side of the North Downs and joins the River Wey at Guildford.
Why is the River Tillingbourne a suitable investigation location?
Safe (not to deep)
Accessible (can walk to river)
Can be reached in a day
What secondary evidence did you use in your investigation?
environmental agency risk map
Why are the river investigation locations suitable?
- sites show river changes
- Shows both high and low risk sites
- sites are easily accessible
What were the 3 data collection methods?
width, depth, velocity
how did we measure the depth
meter stick, measure every 20cm
how did we measure the width
tape measure from bank to bank
how did we measure velocity
hydroprop flow metre
How did you record qualitative data?
detailed, labelled field sketches
How did you represent data for your fieldwork?
finding the average
How did the channel characteristics change downstream?
channel increases in width and depth further downstream
How could you improve the quantitative data collection methods?
velocity- use a flow meter rather then a floating object going downstream
How could you improve the qualitative data collection methods?
take a photo for increased accuracy
What type of sample did you use to choose your sites?
stratified to demonstrate the different areas of guildford
