10.7 Adaptations Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is an adaptation?
A characteristic that increases an organism’s chance of survival and reproduction in its environment
What are the 3 types of adaptations?
Behavioural, anatomical, and physiological
What are physiological adaptations?
Adaptations of processes that can take place inside an organism
State types of anatomical adaptations.
-Body coverings
-Camouflage
-Teeth
-Mimicry
What is the purpose of mimicry?
To copy another animals appearance or sounds to fool predators into thinking it is dangerous
State types of behavioural adaptations.
-Survival behaviours
-Courtship
-Seasonal behaviours (e.g migration, hibernation)
What is hibernation?
A period of inactivity where an animal’s heart rate, breathing rate and body temperature are lowered to conserve energy
What are the two main categories of behavioural adaptations?
Innate and learned behaviour
What is innate behaviour?
Behaviour inherited through genes
What is learned behaviour?
Behaviour learnt from experience or observing other animals
State examples of physiological adaptations.
-Poison production
-Antibiotic production
-Water holding
What is an analogous structure?
Structures that have adapted to perform the same function, but have a different origin
What is convergent evolution?
Organisms that evolve similarities, because the organisms adapt to similar environments, or other seleciton pressures
What type of adaptation provides evidence for convergent evolution?
Anatomical adaptations
What are anatomical adaptations?
Physical characteristics or structures of an organism.
What is a behavioural adaptation?
A change in how an animal acts
