A

o Pre-existing obesity – poor diet, lack of exercise

o Fluid retention – polyhydramnios, heart, kidney, liver failure

A

obesity; associated conditions may be present:

o GDM

o Pre-eclampsia

o Infections

What investigations would you do for obesity in pregnancy?

A

o BMI monitoring

o Bloods – FBC, LFT, UE, cholesterol, OGTT

o USS – liquor volume, foetal growth scans

What is the management of obesity in pregnancy?

A

o Conservative – more exercise, better diet, vitamin D supplementation

o Labour planning – assess risk of giving birth via vaginal delivery and whether there needs to be induction/CS

o Post-natal follow up – T2DM testing

What are the complications of obesity in pregnancy?

A

o GDM, pre-eclampsia, infections, overdue pregnancy, labour difficulties, CS or miscarriage

o Prognosis – almost 1/3 maternal deaths are in obese mothers
