Active Transport Flashcards
1
Q
What is active transport?
A
The movement of particles from an area of low to high concentration across a partially permeable membrane.
2
Q
Why is it active?
A
It is because it requires energy from ATP.
3
Q
How does it move?
A
It moves up the concentration gradient.
4
Q
Why do root hair cells have lots of mitochondria?
A
Mitochondria are needed to release energy from glucose.
Root hair cells need to actively transport mineral ions across the membranes because the soil has a higher concentration of ions.
5
Q
Why does the small intestine have lots of mitochondria.
A
Active transport is used to move glucose against the concentration gradient into epithelial cells.
