Q

Explain classical conditioning ( learning through association)

A

When the baby learns to associate 2 stimuli together.

For babies food is unconditioned stimuli so it has a unconditioned response. The caregiver starts as a neutral stimulus and produces no response.
As they feed the child the child become conditioned stimulus and illicit a conditioned response .

This is considered love.

Q

Explain operant conditioning ( learning through reinforcement)

A

Is learning from the consequences of behaviour.

If there is a positive response it is more likely to be reinforced and thus repeated E.G the baby crying for the response of food.

Reinforcement is a 2 way process. ( using the example of babies crying and CG responding)

Mutual reinforcement strengthens an attachment.

(S)

A

E: Lack of support form human studies
Schaffer and Emerson (1964) found babies tended to form att. With their mother regardless of whether they fed them

E: Food is not the main factor in the formation if attachments

P: Social learning theory os an alternative a explanation

W

A

E: Hay & Vespa (1988) suggest that though modelling behaviours parents teach children to love them.

E: TMT social learning theory provides a better explanation for attachment that better than classical and operant conditioning
