A

There was a 3 way tie in the electoral college b/t JQA, AJ, and William Crawford. Henry Clay was out of running. Vote went to House and Clay voted for JQA, after which he was named secretary of state. Jackson and his supporters preached deal making

A

John C. Calhoun (VP at time) anonymously wrote the “South Carolina Exposition and Protest” which outlined the concurrent majority, a notion that a state could null and void a federal law if a convention of the people deemed it harmful to the interest of an individual state.

vetoed many bills and project. Endorsed Indian Removal Act of 1830, which sought to remove all tribes west of the Mississippi.

What led to Second Nullification crisis? outcome?

A

Jackson supported high Tariff rates. John C Calhoun resigned as VP and composed the Ordinance of Nullification. Customs officials were ordered to stop collecting the duties at the port of charleston. Jackson sent federal troops to collect taxes. Over time, the duties were reduced.

A
  1. Jackson attempts to get rid of national bank. Bank president/ direct Biddle tightens up on credit and calls in loans, hoping federal gov’t will hold back. = recession
  2. Biddle is forced to loosen up, economy rebounds.
  3. Jackson orders large distribution of surplus funds, sells land for cheap. Causes inflation of prices which is no good. Jackson orders species circular, requiring land to be paid for in hard money, not paper or credit
