A
Warning should precede application unless not feasible. Purpose:
- Provide opportunity to comply
- Warn officers of deployment

A

May be used when:

  • Subject is violent or is physically resisting
  • Subject has demonstrated, by action, an intention to be violent/resist and has potential to harm officers/others
  • May be used against dangerous animals if they pose an imminent threat to human safety

Flight alone w/o other circumstances is not good cause for use

305.5.2 - Special considerations

A

Should not be used on certain individuals unless totality of circumstances indicates reasonable:

  • Pregnant
  • Elderly or juveniles
  • Low body mass
  • Handcuffed/restrained
  • OC exposure or close to flammable material
  • Position may cause collateral injury (Fall from height, vehicles)

  • Target lower center of mass
  • Avoid head, neck, chest, groin
  • If probe strikes prohibited area monitor subject until aid

  • One cycle then evaluate
  • Multiple cycles not recommended and should be avoided
    If 1st app isn’t working officer should consider:
  • Probes making contact?
  • Can they comply? Opportunity to comply?
  • Verbal commands or other tactics more effective?
    Officers should avoid deploying multiple tasers at one subject

  • Aid for any exposure (including laser to eyes)
