Ch 23: Outcome Measurements Flashcards

1
Q

Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS)

A

Measure of level of consciousness which also serves as a level of brain injury

Score range between 3 and 15

3 components: eye opening, verbal response, and motor response

Q

Which factor of TBI is a good predictor of long term issues following brain injury?

Q

Abbreviated injury scale (AIS) for the head

A

Acute measure
1 time measure of the severity of head injury

Ranges from 1 (minor) to 6 (unsurvivable)

Part of the Injury Severity Score (0-75)

Q

Loss of Consciousness

A

Communicates severity of injury and related short term prognoses.

LOC <30 min = mild
LOC >30 min but <24 hours = moderate
LOC >24 hours = severe

LOC ends when GCS motor score = 6 (TBIMS)

Disability Rating Scale (DRS)

A

Acute rehab measure
Older measure of brain injury (research instrument)

8 item assessment of impairment, disability, and handicap or participation

Can be used from coma to community

Participation section has an item on employability (public domain)

Q

Mayo Portland Adaptability Inventory (MPAI-4)

A

Post acute measure
Measures problems after brain injury

Can be self rated or rated by a clinician/S.O.

Ability index, adjustment index, and participation index

Designed to measure physical, cognitive, emotional, behavior, and social issues after discharge

Q

Validity versus reliability

A

Valid measure- measures what it is intended to measure

16
Q

Why is outcome measurement important?

A
  1. describe individuals with TBI in a common language which other professionals will understand
  2. accurate recording of change and treatment effectiveness
17
Q

What is the minimum number of measurements needed to show the effectiveness of an intervention?

A

two- one at baseline and one after treatment

18
Q

Measures used after acute injury

A

GCS, Abbreviated Injury Scale for the Head, JFK Coma Recovery Scale, Measures of PTA- GOAT, O-Log

19
Q

Measures used in acute rehab

A

FIM and FAM, Disability Rating Scale, Rancho Los Amigos Level of Cognitive Functioning Scale

20
