THE NEURON DOCTRINE

A

The view that the nervous system is comprised of discrete cells (neurons), which are separate from one another as opposed to forming a continuous network.

Before the work of Santiago Ramon y Cajal in the late 1800s, the reticular theory was the predominant view of the structure of the nervous system.

RETICULAR THEORY

A

Theory that the nervous system is made up of one network of continuous nerve fibers. The reticular theory suggested that there is no separation between nerve cells. It was replaced by the neuron doctrine in the late 1800s.

HOMEOBOX

A

Es el dominio en el ADN de un gen. Un homeobox tiene una extensión de unos 180 pares de bases y codifica una secuencia de aminoácidos o dominio proteico (el homeodominio) que puede adherirse a segmentos del ADN.

Los genes homeobox codifican factores de transcripción que inician cascadas de transcripción de otros genes determinando la aparición de una estructura u otra.

LIGANDO

A

Aquella molécula que se une al centro activo de la proteína para que ésta pueda realizar su función (transportar, o inhibir una reacción metabólica).

Por ejemplo, el ligando de la hemoglobina es el oxígeno, ya que es la molécula que se une al centro activo de la proteína para que ésta pueda transportarlo.
