A

Why was teaching becoming less popular under the nazi regime?

A

Despite wanting to use the schools to indoctrinate children, the Nazis were anti intellectual so teachers were not shown much respect from the administration or the pupils. In 1938 there were 8000 teaching vacancies and only 2500 new teachers qualified.

A

A

They had to massively change the curriculum. 1935 onwards there was a stream of central directives that covered all years in education and all subjects. There was a 15% increase in sport in the curriculum. History was focused in creating a Volksgemeinschaft as well as being based on the glory of Germany as nationalism was essential.

A

Some textbooks were censored, some were burned, some multilated. Booklets were introduced to support the new ares of the curriculum such as booklets for race studies which explained how Aryan’s are the superior race and how Jews are the source of all evil

In 1937 the Hitler youth opened up their first schools for future administrators, similar to napolas, but their physical training did not equip students to be administrators.

What was the point of the youth movements?

A

To nail the message, that was taught at schools, into the children’s heads. For example leaders of camps were given pamphlets of information to teach to the children for example the unfairness of Versailles all the way to racial purity and having strong and healthy babies.

They were expected to report on anything their teachers or family did that was against nazi teachings

A

The very best pupils went to Order Castles. These schools took pupils to the limits of physical endurance. Graduates from the Order Castles could expect a high position in the army or the party.

Impact of the nazi education system

A
  • Jews forced out Germany schools and could only attend Jewish ones which were abolished in 1942.
  • Conflict between organisations such as the ministry of education: caused the nazi education system to be diluted with traditional, Weimar influences.
  • Unknowing of how to deliver curriculum: teachers became unsatisfied
  • Attitude to teachers went down
  • due to constant enforcement of ideology, standards and grades declined, affecting university intake.
  • Weakening of education is directly proportional to strengthening of indoctrination
