Dental pulp
A
- Derived from mesenchyme + ectomesenchyme of dental epithelium
- Formed from dental papilla courtesy to odontoblasts during late bell stage
Pulp histogenesis
- Begins in the bud stage
- Ends when root formation is completed
- Throughout this period pulp is in embryonic stage

A
Follows the morphological stages of tooth development
Bud stage ⇢ Cap stage ⇢ Early + Late Bell stage

Bud stage
A
- Dental lamina grows + thickens to form bud
- Cells of ectomesenchyme proliferate + condense to form dental papilla
- Tooth forming potential is transferred from dental epithelium ⇢ dental papilla

Cap stage
A
- Tooth bud looks like a cap surrounding dental papilla
- Mesenchyme cells ⇢ form Dental follicle
- Enamel knot influences shape of crown + development of dental papilla

Early bell stage
A
- Exchange of molecular information between enamel organ + dental papilla
- Results in cell differentiation during late bell stage

Late bell stage
A
- Most peripheral cells of dental papilla enlarge
- These become tooth’s epithelial-mesenchymal interface ⇢ Odontoblasts
- Odontoblasts ⇢ Synthesis + secretion of dentin matrix
- At this stage dental papilla = dental pulp

Vascularisation of pulp
A
Starts during the 2 bell stages
- small branches of principal vascular trunk of jaw ⇢ enter base papilla
- Main vessels enlarge + run through pulp ⇢ towards cuspal region
- Here they give off several branches ⇢ forming bed of venules, arterioles, capillaries
- These are located in subodontoblastic + odontoblastic regions
