  1. Mediator between god and man (represent god to people and vice versa)
  2. Can administer sacraments (7 for RCC - baptism, confirmation, confession, marriage, ordination, holy communion, last rites) sacraments are way of receiving god’s grace into life
    - Priests have authority to say that god has forgiven them when ppl confess sins cos only he has power to pronounce absolution
    - RCC believe only priest can offer mass because priest has power to consecrate bread + wine ( make holy)

  2. provides pastoral care for congregation eg visiting sick
  3. Studies bible + Christianity in detail -> can answer any qs that ppl have about the faith + they teach

Why do Catholics have such a high regard for their priests?

  1. Beliefs of Early Church - has authority as they had an ordained ministry of ‘elders’
  2. Authority -> apostolic succession (stand in line w teachings given to OG 😎 disciples ✝️
  3. Pass on unwritten oral message of Jesus (apostolic tradition)
  4. Priests 6 yrs training - highly qualified (give effective advice 📚)
  5. Set apart from laity (to perform sacraments) -> ordination by bishop where Holy Spirit ✨ 🕊 ✨ and authority of Jesus ✝️ conferred upon the priest
  6. Save people via sacraments
  7. Celibate (complete dedication to god + job) 🚫😽

  2. Ordains, appoints + disciplines them, ensures everyone in diocese is following teachings
  3. Link between local parishes + Church of Rome
  4. Main pastor of diocese - makes sure all churches perform Eucharist regularly + properly

Why do Catholics respect the Bishop so much?

  1. Through ordination chosen by god
  2. Authority of God to preach, teach through apostolic succession + tradition 📚🏛
  3. In charge of whole diocese -> authority must be respected to ensure that church teachings are upheld

  2. Known as Bishop of Rome - cares for his diocese etc as well
  3. Elected by cardinals guided by HS ✨ 🕊 and remains pope usually until he dies
  4. Organises magisterium + ensures all important issues are considered
  5. Ultimate authority - can speak ex Cathedra 🗣 💎
  6. Appoints + ordains new cardinals + bishops

  2. Only vicars can conduct marriages and consecrate bread + wine at holy communion
  3. CofE vicars undergo ordination where church officially recognises calling of god upon person’s life (by bishop laying hands on them) + gives them authority to minister for parish ⛪️

  1. 1 Corinthians Paul wrote about how different people can do different things - no one more special than the other - everyone needed
  2. Rely heavily on conscience to make moral decisions and services have little content ->unnecessary to have ordained ministry
