6
Q

what is electrochemical corrosion?

A

a single piece of metal in contact with electrolyte. this can occur in the atmosphere or under immersion. It is often a slow process

8
Q

what is electrolytic corrosion?

A

two dissimilar metals, in the same electrolyte, and an electrical current from an outside source flowing between the two metals.

Q

what is electrochemistry?

A

chemical reactions that produce electric currents and the chemical reactions that are caused by those currents in an electrolyte

Q

what are qualities of more noble metals?

A

they are more passive chemically
they are less negative electrically
these metals are catotic and more resistant to corrosion

13
Q

what are two major things that happen during all corrosion in seawater?

A
  1. metal atoms are lost by the anode
  2. ions are formed in the seawater. these can either be a protective coating on the cathode or produce alkalis that attack wood

15
Q

what is the white powder coating on aluminum and the pink coating on bronze?

A

hydroxyl ions. a cathodic protective coating that occurs as a reaction from the anode loosing its atoms onto the cathodic metal. this happens on most metals except iron or mild steel.

16
Q

what does it mean when water is basic or alkali?

A

it contains more hydroxl ions than hydrogen ions.

17
Q

what is lignin?

A

its what binds the celulose fibers and hardens and strengthens wood.

18
Q

what is alkali delignificatoin?

A

when there is too much anodic protection and the hydroxl ions no longer bind to the metal and instead build up in the electrolyte making it alkaline, this dissolves the lignin in the wood resulting in delignification

19
Q

where does rust form?

A

On iron and iron containing materials

20
Q

what does rust need to form?

A

oxidation and moisture

21
Q

is it easy to predict specific corrosion rate

A

no

22
Q

what 2 things does the presence of salt in water do?

A

1 increase electrical conductivity

2 chlorine ions break down protective films formed by metal
