1.1 Flashcards
(25 cards)
Levels of Organization
Atom, molecule, organelle, cell, tissue, organ, system of organs, organism
What are the four types of tissue?
Epthelial, muscle, connective, and nervous
Epthelial Tissue
covers the body surface and lines the cavities of the body. The cells that make up epithelial tissue are specialized for tasks such as secretion and absorption
What is tissue?
are groups of cells that perform a common function
Muscle Tissue
contractive tissue that enables us to move
Connective Tissue
offers support and protection of body organs
Nervous Tissue
responsible for the communication between the cells of the body
What is the Integumentary system?
The skin that contains three main layers. The epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. Also contains hair, sweat glands, and sensory nerves.
What is the skeletal system?
Acts as the framework for the body. Supports body and protects organs
What is the muscular system?
tissue that enables movement
What are the three types of muscle fiber?
cardiac muscle, skeletal, muscle, and smooth muscle
What is the nervous system?
The brain, spinal cord, and all the nerves. Provides communication within the body
What is the digestive system?
It starts in the mouth and continues thru the anus.
What does the digestive system do?
specializes in absorbing nutrients and gets nutrients into blood
What is the endocrine system?
Made up of glands that make hormones
What is the cardiovascular system?
Made up of blood vessels that move blood, oxygen, and nutrients throughout the body.
What is the lymphatic system?
lymph nodes that return excess fluid from cardiovascular system. Fights off diseases
What is the respiratory system?
Involved in excretion of the waste CO2, keeps the blood supplied with oxygen.
What is the reproductive system?
specialized organs responsible for creating new life
What is the urinary system?
Involved in excretion of waste from the body.
What is metabolism?
all the chemical reactions that take place in the body that enable us to function
What is catabolism?
breakdown of substances into simpler units
What is anabolism?
the synthesizing of more complex structures from simpler ones.
What is ATP?
An energy rich molecule that powers cellular activities
