Q

Can you use high altitude IAFs (at or above FL180) for holding?

A

No, but they can be used to ID an IAF below FL180 regardless of whether it’s a high or low altitude approach

11
Q

Unless correcting for known winds make all turns during entry and while holding at what bank?

A

3 deg/sec or 30 deg bank or what the FD commands, whichever is least. The bank angle for the entry turn may be varied (up to 30 deg maximum) to obtain desired displacement

12
Q

How’s the 70 deg method work (within 70 deg)?

A

If inbound course is within 70 deg of aircraft heading turn outbound in the direction of holding and into the holding. Upon completion of the outbound leg proceed direct or intercept holding course to fix.

13
Q

How’s the 70 deg method work (not within 70 deg)?

A

If inbound holding course is not within 70 deg of aircraft heading turn outbound in the shorter direction to parallel the holding course. If turn places you on non holding side either parallel or attempt to intercept the holding course outbound. Then turn towards the holding side and proceed direct or intercept the holding course to the fix if on holding course or non holding side.

14
Q

How can you teardrop with the 70 deg method?

A

If entering holding on a heading conveniently aligned (within 45 deg of selected teardrop course). Upon completion of the teardrop course turn toward the holding course to intercept the holding course inbound.

15
Q

How’s the AIM method work (parallel)?

A

Turn to a heading to parallel the outbound holding course for the time or distance then turn towards the holding side and return to the holding fix or intercept the holding course inbound.

16
Q

How’s the AIM method work (teardrop)?

A

Turn outbound to a heading for a 30 deg teardrop entry on holding side for appropriate time or distance and then turn towards the holding course to intercept the inbound holding course.

17
Q

When do you begin outbound timing for holding?

A

When over or abeam the fix. Or wings level outbound if cannot determine abeam position.

18
Q

When do you begin inbound timing?

A

When wings level inbound.

19
Q

What can pilots do if given a clearance specifying the time to depart a holding pattern?

A

They can adjust the pattern within limits of the established holding procedure so as to depart at the specified time.

20
Q

The standard holding pattern below 14,000’ for the T-6 takes how long?

A

2 min for 360 deg turn and 1 Min per leg so 4 minutes total

21
Q

How can you calculate drift corrections?

A

Divide the XWind component by aircraft speed in NM/min (use the TK function on the GPS)

22
Q

When may pilots descend to the published minimum holding altitude if at an altitude above that?

A

When cleared for the approach. If the IAF is located in the holding pattern, the altitude is IAF altitude. If there is no altitude at the IAF or for the holding pattern, Min holding altitude is the same as Min altitude at the FAF. In this case maintain last assigned altitude until established on a segment of the IAP being flown.
