1.1 Biological Molecules: Enzymes Flashcards

1
Q

What happens if the temperature is too low for enzymes?

A

if the temperature is too low there is not enough kinetic energy for successful collisions to take place between the enzyme and substrate

Q

What happens if the temperature is too high for enzymes?

A

if the temperature is to high then the enzymes will denature this will lead to the active site changing shape and Enxyume substrate complexes cannot form.

Q

What happens if the PH is too high or too low for enzymes?

A

if the ph is either too high or too low this will interfere with the charges in the amino acids in the active site. This can break the bonds holding the tertiary structure in place and in turn changing the active site shape.

Q

what is the effect of substrate and enzyme concentration?

A

if there is insufficient substrate then the reaction will be slower as there will be fewer collisions between the enzyme and substrate.

if there are fewer enzymes then fewer active sights are available for them to become saturated with substrates and will not work any faster

Q

What is a competitive inhibitor?

A

A competitive inhibitor is the same shape as the substrate that can bind to the active site. This prevents the substrate from binding and the reaction from occurring. If you add more substrate this will flood/out-compete the inhibitor.
