Q

Biological intervention to a phobia

Benzodiazepine -

A

A short-acting anti anxiety med that binds to a GABA receptor site of a post synaptic neutron in order to calm the body and brain.
GABA is then able to have an inhibitory affect reducing the likelihood for a neutron to fire providing temporary relief of extreme stress.
Benzo’s temporarily increase the inhibitory effect of a neurotransmitter GABA

Q

GABA dysfunction -

A

GABA dysfunction is insufficient neural transmission of inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA, low levels of GABA = increased neural excitement = high levels of anxiety increasing the development of a phobia.

LTP - Long term potentiation is the long lasting experienced depended strengthening of the synaptic connections that are repeatedly co activated. This can strengthen the association between the neural signals involved in perceiving anxiety induced stimulus and memory of the fear response resulting in a phobia

Q

How do protective factors influence an individuals level of resilience?

A

Protective factors prevent the occurrence or reoccurrence of a mental health disorder.

Adequate diet provides a baseline for mental and physical health that allows a person to adapt to change when faced with a stressor.
Having adequate sleep helps a person function effectively, regulate mood, prevent the likelihood of sickness. this will allow a person to better respond to and overcome a stressor.

A

the increase in susceptibility and contribution to a phobia by a type of passive learning through association. Phobias can be a learned through classical conditioning as the fear response can be learned.

Q

Perpetuation by operant conditioning

A

The inhibility of recovery from a phobia caused by a kind of learning through consequences of an action. prevents ones ability to overcome a phobia as negative reinforcement in the consequences stage of operant conditioning strengthens the avoidance behaviours making the phobia less likely to be over come.
