11. Magnetic Fields Flashcards
(5 cards)
What direction do field lines go?
North to south.
What is used to figure out the direction of the magnetic field around a current carrying wire?
The right hand rule, where your thumb represents the current and your index finger represents the direction of the magnetic field.
What is a solenoid?
A looped current carrying wire forms a doughnut shaped magnetic field, while a coil with length (a solenoid) forms a field like a bar magnet.
How do you work out the direction of the force acting on a wire?
Use the left hand rule:
F - Force, thumb
B - Magnetic field, index finger
I - Current, middle finger
What is magnetic flux density?
The force on one metre of wire carrying a current of one amp at right angles to the magnetic field.
