16
Q

describe the separation of petroleum into useful
fractions by fractional distillation

A

petroleum must be refined before commercially useful products are produced. the components in the crude oil have different boiling points so fractional distillation can be used to separate the components. the fraction containing molecules with the lowest boiling point condense at higher levels of the fractionating column

17
Q

how do the properties of fractions obtained from petroleum changed from bottom to top?

A

decreasing chain length, lower boiling point, lower viscosity, higher volatility (tendency of a substance to evaporate at normal temperatures)

A
26
Q

properties of alkanes

A

generally unreactive except in terms of combustion and substitution by chlorine

27
Q

what happens in a substitution reaction?

A

one atom or group of atoms is replaced by another atom or group of atoms
