1.1 Representation of Geographical Features Flashcards
(24 cards)
What does the term ‘topography’ mean? (5)
indicates relief features such as
mountains
hills
ridges
valleys
coastal plains
In India, who produces topographical maps
Survey Of India
contour lines
contour lines are imaginary lines joining places which have the same height above the sea level
contour interval
the difference in height between two adjacent contour lines
what 2 factors does the contour interval depend on
- scale
- minimum and maximum heights in the area
coutour index
every fifth contour line is drawn bold and is known as contour index
What 3 things are contour lines used to show?
- Height of the land
- Steepness of the land
- Shape of the land
what is a steep slope
sudden rise or fall of the land
what is a gentle slope
gradual rise or fall of the land
what is a hill
large mass of land that rises to a height much above the surrounding area
top of a hill
summit/
peak
what is a plateau
large mass of comparatively flat land that rises abruptly from the surrounding area
what is a ridge and how is it represented on a map
narrow, elongated hill with steep slopes
elliptical contours that are closely spaced
what is a col
the top of a ridge usually has a number of small summits separated by depressions
if the depression is narrow and steep sided - its a col
what is a saddle
a broad and low depression that gentle descends from the summit of a ridge is called saddle
what is a pass
narrow gap in a range of mountains that provides a passage through it
what is a gap
a pass that has been lowered in height by the action o a river
what is a settlement
a settlement is a place where people construct their homes and other necessary facilities and interact with their environment as well as with each other
6 factors which govern the development of settlements
favorable climate
availability of land and water
fertility of soil
accessibility
presence of minerals
industries
three types of settlements
dispersed
nucleated/compact
Linear
Dispersed settlements (3)
found in hilly and forested areas, where accessibility is low
these settlements consist of scattered houses
very large farms is another example
Compact/Nucleated settlements (3)
in river valleys and fertiles plains,
where land is flat and accessibility is good
consists of houses built close together
linear settlements (2)
along the river banks, coasts, roads or railway lines’
houses built in a line, facing each other
