1.1 Study of Biology Flashcards
(20 cards)
What does PMC stand for?
program, metabolism, container
What does CER stand for and what is each purpose?
claim - question, evidence - data, reasoning - explanation
Why is metabolism important?
it is energy that is used to function
What is a tissue?
a group of cells that work together on specific task
What is an atom?
fundamental building block of a chemical element
What is an example of an organelle?
chloroplast
Is an ecosystem smaller of bigger than a population and why?
An ecosystem is bigger than a population because an ecosystem makes up all populations that interact such as all living things and non-living things in a lake.
Is a tissue smaller or bigger than an organ and why?
A tissue is smaller than an organ because an organ is made up of tissues.
Is a biome smaller or bigger than an ecosystem and why?
A biome is bigger than an ecosystem because a biome makes up all the similar ecosystems.
How would you define a cell and what is an example?
A cell is the smallest living unit. An example would be a prokaryote.
An example of an atom?
carbon
What is a molecule and give an example?
multiple atoms bonded together - carbon dioxide
Is organelle smaller or bigger than a cell and why?
An organelle is smaller than a cell because they specialize in various jobs inside cells.
What is a community and give an example?
All different populations make up a community. A community would be all living things in a pond.
What is a biosphere?
all ecosystems that make up Earth
What is an example of a biome?
desert
What is the purpose of container in the PMC model of life?
All cells have a membrane for balance to allow certain things in and certain things out to always keep a constant internal state.
What is an organ and give an example?
An organ is a group of tissues. An example would be skin or the heart.
What is the organ system and give an example?
Organ system is a group of organs. An example would be circulatory.
