1

Define hydrocarbon

A compound containing carbon and hydrogen only

2

Define saturated hydrocarbon

Saturated - Containing single bonds only
Saturated hydrocarbon - hydrocarbon with single bonds only

3

Define unsaturated hydrocarbon

Containing multiple carbon-carbon bonds
e.g. C=C

4

Define functional group

Part of the organic molecule responsible for its chemical reactions

5

Define aliphatic

Containing carbon atoms joined in unbranched (straight) or branched chains, or non-aromatic rings

6

Define alicyclic

Carbon atoms joined to each other in a ring (cyclic) structure, with or without branches

7

Define aromatic

Some or all of the carbon atoms found in a benzene ring (C6H6 unsaturated hydrocarbon)

8

Define homologous series

A series of organic compounds with the same functional group but with each successive member differing by one -CH2 group

9

Define alkene, alkane and alkyne

Alkane - containing C-C (single carbon carbon bond

Alkene - C=C (containing carbon-carbon double bond)

Alkyne - containing at least 1 triple carbon-carbon bond
