Q

Adam Smith

A

Mercantilism- economic belief that there’s a limited amount of money out there. they’re determining value in precious metals- silver and gold. people wanted to extract those resources out.

Adam Smith 18th century: Wealth of Nations
Consumerism+Mercantilism= Economic exploitation

Everyone read it. The concept is how to make more profit. He studies the mercantilistic system. Great Britain, the mother country is in the center. All the thirteen colonies surround her. Mother country extracts as much wealth as possible from the colonies. Colony send raw materials. Colonizing country spits out manufactured goods. It’s a profit cycle for them. They exploit the colony to pull it out. From the European perspective, they want money brought into their territory. They didn’t believe in a balanced form of trade. The trade is focused on mother country. Every element connected to mercantilism. Today it’s modern day capitalism. He describes early capitalistic market economy. Adam Smith says mercantilism doesn’t make all the money. A free trade market will make more. He says we need to create more demand in the colonies to create more trade. He says that will bring the greatest profits to both the colonies and mother country. We will all benefit.

Powhatan Indians

A

Between 1609 to 1610 things were rough in Jamestown. It is called the starving time. People resulted to cannibalism cuz they failed at getting food. Another reason they will fail is because they will settle among Powhatan Indians. Tribe of 14,000 with 3200 warriors. Indians will get fed up with the early Jamestown settlement and will have the Good Friday Massacre killing over 347 settlers in 1622. They already see Indians as uncivilized and they’re going to say from that experience. “How should we treat them?”

Q

Joint Stock Companies

A

Joint stock companies mean profit. A group of businessmen in England will come together with a joint venture/idea. They want to invest in a colony in America so they bring their money together into a joint stock company. Did it for a profit in 1606, Jamestown. This joint stock company approached the king and asked for permission to go to the Americas. You can’t just get on a boat and go because it’s the king’s territory. The King granted it and they went.

Q

Lord Baltimore

A

It is not a joint stock company. It’s a proprietorship.
One person has complete control of colony by the king. In the case of Maryland it is Sir George Calvert a.k.a Lord Baltimore. He’s given the right to found the colony because he’s good buddies with King James. They get favors cause they’re buddies.

Lord Baltimore has a Utopian Vision:
Freedom of worship- sanctuary for persecuted Catholics. king/queen were establishing religion for everybody and he didn’t like that. he was expelled for being catholic in the polit system. he wants religious people to live in peace with no more killing or war. there is no state church in maryland.
legacy of separation of church and state
calmer settlement. bought land from Indians (opposite of Virginia). has better time with Indians cuz he worked with them. he recognized them as a sovereign people. he saw it as their land and compensated them for it.
built feudal manors with local control of gov. divided maryland in manors. 6000 acres- large chunks of land. if you bought land from him you’d be lord of the manor and be responsible for people under you. you are responsible for jurisdiction over your manor and determined voting power for people living on your manor.
he is so serious about religious toleration he passed an act. “Act Concerning Religion” or Toleration Act of 1649 to tolerate religion. The problem is that a lot of Puritans will go to Maryland and they believe in theocracy and overturned the act of tolerance.

Q

Bacon’s Rebellion

A

What was the result?
disgruntled groups unite for the rebellion. Freemen opposed building of frontier forts. THey oppose the taxes placed upon them by the colony’s governers. There are resistance to paying taxes when they’re not letting them vote. Bacon led freemen against Indians. There didn’t want to pay taxes for the forts and they didn’t want to wait around for militia. Led to more problems

How did they reform?
Cut taxes so freemen identified with planter-merchant class, not poor whites or slaves. The freemen moved up a step. The slaves and the angry white men have more numbers than the 20 percent of the planter-merchant elite though. Racism is used as a way to isolate poor white from other groups. Slavery legalized.

Mayflower Compact

A

Pilgrims will enter Mayflower compact before they got off the boat. all the men at the head of fams get together and agree upon shit. They’re planting the first colony in the northern parts of Virginia. They’re not getting off the boat till they estab. laws, a gov., and enter a covenant (agreement). Legacy of mayflower Compact
There’s gov. One thats for the general good and one where humans have consented them. it’s not enforced or imposed on them. There’s no women signatures though. English are bringing with them their legal traditions. Women only have legal rights through the extension of their husband. THey have polit power and polit voice through their husband. he speaks for you through his decision.

Q

Roger Williams

A

Roger Williams pushed for religious toleration. For him he believes all the troubles of the world have come from imposing religous beliefs on citizens. They should be able to choose whether they’re a Puritan or not. First American voice of relig freedom. Puritan ministers couldn’t handle this. People would gossip about the ministers. When Women would do that it was heresy. He was banished to Rhode Island. Rhode Island is for the bad people. Roger Williams will make sure religous toleration is the founding ideal of Rhode Island.

Q

Anne Hutchinson

A

Anne Hutchinson is a symbol like Roger Williams. She listened to the Puritans. She’s educated and faithfully studied the bible. She had meetings in her house to discuss the scriptures. She helped people understand it through vernacular language. Word gets out and ministers go to her because women are not allowed to hold relig meetings in their home. She called her friends back anyways and had more relig meetings. SHe had her husband’s support and her childrens and her friends. She will be declared a heretic and bought before the church courts. Whithin Puritan New England, there are two ways of punishing you: colonial and church court. She spoke out, criticized ministers, and held meetings in her home. It’s really bad because she’s a woman

Anne Bradstreet

A

Another example of an exceptional Puritan woman for us is Anne Bradstreet. She was a mother with 7 8 9 kids whose husband traveled a lot. When her children were asleep, she wrote. She was a poet. She was the first female poet. She published them under her brothers name. It was widely known and respected. She recognizes what her society says is expected of her. She creates the concept of personhood- recognize me as a person because they’re not seen as a valid person. She just wants her poetry to be respected and known it was her. Though she’s in a submissive role, she doesn’t hate her husband for it.

Salem Witch Trials

A

At the same time in PUritan New England we have the witch stories. It happens in 1691 in Salem, Massachusetts. We have an incident of young girls acting strange- twitching, eyes rolling back, etc. The town believes they’re possessed by evil spirts or a witch has placed a curse on them. Historians still disagree over the causes. Some thought the girls ate hallucinogenic berries, religious- believed new minister brought damage, land disputes- old fams gobbled up all the land and were stingy with selling it. fams would have disputes over boundaries of their land. if they were angry with their neighbors they could be accused of witchcraft. accuse wife to get back at the man to make him bend to their will. Another proposed possibility is that it was a gender problem. The young girls are no diff than the Annes. They knew what their role was and didnt like it. They never went out except for church with their parents. They fueled the fire with their strange behavior and kept it going. Young girls didnt have as much power as older women- midwives or widows. They felt they wouldn’t have that power so they wanted those women to be gone. It’s probably a combo of all these points.

Q

Society of Friends/ George fox

A

The majority of people coming into Penns are Quakers who subscribe to the teachings and beliefs of George Fox. He established a religious group known as the Society of Friends (Quakers) They are extremists in purifying the church, radicals of antinomians.

They believe everyone has an “inner light” for direct conversing with God.
Since they call each other friends, they believe all are equal and capable
Men and women are equal before God, that Adam and Eve were equal before the apple
If you were a woman in colonial America you might want to be a quaker because they’re respected. Women could preach to others
They had no ministers or hierarchy
Every individual is a professor of light who can teach themselves and others
Initially founded in England but received persecution by Protestants so looked for colonization elsewhere
Didn’t believe people were predestined. They believe you determine what’s going to happen.
They’re pacifists, not violent.
They don’t take oaths because it’s disrespectful to God. You’re only loyal to God. You shouldn’t do the hand on the bible oath of truth shit or oath to the flag
No materialism. Didn’t want anything to say you’re wealthier or you’re poor or you have more power and you don’t
They are opposed to slavery and they are the first to abolish slavery. Some will be in the African slave trade, bring them back to Pennsylvania, and made laws to free them.

Q

William Penn

A
William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania brought the holy experiment of Pennsylvania. He was a upper class landowner and sole proprietor from Charles the 2nd. His ideal is home for Quakers. He purchased delaware to get access to Atlantic. He had a plan before he steps foot off his boat. This is very different from Jamestown and Chesapeake. What's his plan?
Frame of Government, 1682. At the top of the list of need is the freedom of religion. There are no taxes without representation. Since they're pacifists and believe in no violence, there is no militia. No one's ever going to get drafted to serve and protect. They're not like Puritans who had militia. He decides how his government is going to look. He wants a one body legislature, unicameral system. Everyone has an equal vote in that body. They oversee the colony. They're going to be massive producers. Main exports are wheat, flour, barley, beef, pork. Pennsylvania is one of the bread basket states of America. It's a great place to plant crops.

Q

White Indians

A

women were assimilated into indian tribes and liked it better b/c they treated women better. The way they view women in their culture and society was better. Rape was punishable by death for Native Amers. Once women go into the tribe they are accepted in. They become valued members of the communities and they find it more appealing. Native Amers had low numbers. If members die, that affects whole tribe. Every person is necessary for survival. Every woman, man, and child. old and young. Women were accepted in and valued. If they lost people they needed to replace them so went after women. They had mourning wars for the people that were lost. They got more people in through mourning wars to replace lost members of their tribe.

Puritans

A

reformers with strict interpretation of the bible
predestined (like calvinism, chosen to be saved or not), if you were chosen you are a select or saint
they want to purify the church to make it what it’s supposed to be
they will be the most successful in New England. they follow the bible literally.
the cornerstone of their society is their family. there are strict roles of submission.
children submit to mother and father, mother submit to father, they all submit to god.
Puritans will enter into the Cambridge Agreement in 1629. It’s a business endeavor motivated by religion. There will be no separation of church and state. They refer to their colony as the city on the hill. Jesus told his disciples that they were “the light of the world. a city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” puritans were literal with that.

Middle Passage

A

The voyage from Africa into the Amer is the middle passage. Large numbers went to Brazil. Lots of Slaves were sent there cuz they kept dying. Before you get on the boat,1 in 3 died from the treatment, the disease in the holding areas, the brutality and violence that are inflicted on them. Slaves are packed onto the ship. They’re head to toe to make room. It’s a genocide. It’s like a human warehouse. It feeds into the disease. They’re no toilet or bathroom so they live in feces for several weeks. One person gets really sicks and it spreads really quickly.

Great Awakening

A

Great Awakening- Religious Unification
Children and members not going to church. Didn’t hapnpen with just the Puritans. Wanted people to get back into the churches. They give eulogies and speeches that are very passionate. John Edwards Preached to people about behavior and actions. Challenged scientific rationalism. Blamed science for people’s lack of faith and participation. His key is if you don’t listen to me you’re going to hell. George Whitefield traveled throughout colonies and published his sermons. He expand and re-enforced christian base in colonies. Colonials were christians but founding fathers were deists. Deists believe God made you, let you go and just watches over you. Deists made laws to control behavior. For example, calories on your french fry box, no soda machines in schools. Gov knows better than you.

Q

Albany Plan

A

Result of War- Benjamin Franklin comes up with a plan called the Albany plan in 1754. THe colonists victory is impossible. They see that the British could care less about what the colonists actually want. They wanted to expand so they could get more colonists and get more tax money. Suggest a council that would meet regularly with reps from each colony that will speak on thier behalf to plan of their defense. Build blueprints for further expansion of colony. It’s the first time any unified body is recommended in the Amer colonies. It’s the direct result of the Indians war and how beat up the colonials were feeling. Recognizes we need our own milit and that will cost more. Had to tax people along with Brit taxes. Benjamin’s plan was considered radical and shocking to many that he would come up with it.

19
Q

Benjamin Franklin

A

Amers enlightened Philosoph.Benjamin Franklin will take these philos and be the enbodiment of the enligtement. He’s a womanizer and also wanted to protect that freedom. He would say he’s not a heathenist, he’s free. He was a party animal and his adolescence was a lifetime. Back then adolescene went to around 16 now it’s into the 20s and late 20s. He had a puritan heritage and it showed in his writing. He’s also a famous inventor (kite, key, electricity) built engines, stoves, and other shit too. Everywhere he went, he’s seeking things that are practical solutions to probs- how to make your life quicker, easier, more efficient. He is able to talk about multiple topics.

20
Q

Mary Rowlandson

A

Mary Rowlandosn. She was responsible for authoring early book in colonial America because Puritan ministers circulated it for her. She is a devout righteous Puritan woman to the core. Her fam’s town will be raided by Indians in the middle of the night. She will see her house burned, husband’s death, she was dragged into the woods by her Indian captors. She will be rescued by New England militia men. When she comes back to tell the ministers of her terrible experience they encouraged her to write it down. It was the first form of lit in Amer. She wrote a captivity narrative. The ministers published it to show example of holding onto their faith and encourage people to be Puritan. The captivity narratives that we have tell the opposite thing. They say she was a liar.

21
Q

Seven Years’ War

A

It is the most important of the colonials wars because the british and colonists will be successful in beating the French. William Pitt advises them and makes the colonies the central stage of the fight. When the war is over the french will be expelled form all the Amer colonies. Never again colonists will have to fight them for prop. french receded back to canada. It’s also significant becuz it leaves the rench really ticked off. THey’ve been fighting 3 wars in the colonies n before that they fought 6 before they got to the colony. They hate each other and still do. Another long term effect is that the British ahve to pay bill sfrom the war and their answer is to tax the colonies. they increased taxes on the colonists.

22
Q

Virginia Resolves

A

Patrick Henry presented this shit during the stamp act congress. Intro. Resolution. Amer got same right as brits. Taxed by reps and shouldn’t pay taxes Cept those voted for

23
Q

Samuel Adams

A

Bostonian. Didn’t write dec with Jefferson

24
First Continental Congress
As a result the colonists will head towards the first continental congress in 1774 saying we have so many probs especially once the coercive or intolerable acts were passed, they couldn't take it anymore. The first congress will be a gathering of 55 delegates from 12 of the 13 colonies. Cept georgia. THey met in philly instead of boston because there were too many troops there. Philly was safer. Big boys like G. Washing, Ben franklin, thomas jefferson met up in the same room in the same place. They created the association, an intercolonial agreement to stop all trade with Britain until parliament repeals the intolerable act. plain and simple. this made the congress revolutionary. it's revolutionary because it changes the way of life in every amer colony and impacts global trade. Congress also estab committees that have the authority to see if the citizens follow along.
25
Thomas Paine
Who is thomas paine? Thomas paine= greatest propagandist to get colonists on board with war, common sense was written by thomas paine. he migrates over from england, is buddies with ben franklin, and will know other delegates b/c of his friendship w/ franklin. says colonists are happy b/c they see themselves as brits. they aren't ready to jump ship. he will go to work for the penns magazine. he will then write common sense. sold 150 thou copies in less than three months. it tells you that the colonists were literate if they're going to go buy polit pamplets, they're also vested in their polit world. hit half mil whithin a year when word spreads about his piece. what he did in that piece is that he wrote in plain, simple language and was bold and blunt. here's what the king did, here's what colonists did, here's how it applies to locke, and here's what you should do colonists. thomas paine will be attracted to quakers. He was anti-slavery and pro-women. He's not just speaking up for average men, but for everyone. It's reflective of a quaker who didn't' have slaves and treated women well.
26
Abigail Adams
Large number of Amer women want to speak out about it. Abigail adams, john adam's wife, was educated. At this time, she will express a commonly held female point of view about the revo and how the constit should work. She's part of a growing movement and thought called republican motherhood where women should be educated and civically minded. Many women in the north participated at daughters of liberty (homespun things, non consumption campaigns) Their husbands and sons will go off to war and women will have to take care of businesses, farms, plantations which is what abigail did while john was gone. Mistresses will have to step up and take care of things. They formulate a theory that patriarchs are tyrants. So their husbands will be tyrannical. Just as the men accused the king of being tyrannical, they will say that about their husbands. Says all men would be tyrants if they could. If care and attention is not paid to the ladies, they'll rebel.  Republican Motherhood carries on for women almost until amer civil war. this concept that you have to be educated and civic minded as a mother b/c you have to teach your children to be good citizens. you are the primary person to be educating them. you have to be aware of politics and what's going on to train children in public virtue. they argued the future of the amer republic rests on the shoulders of mothers.  educated civic minded women+ train children in public virtue= future of amer repub the women wanted to keep up their end of the social contract and contrib to social order of amer so they have to be as smart as the men to be able to fulfill their patriotic service to their country. they have to be educated to participate.
27
William Bradford
under William bradford, the pilgrims will purchase a charter from the Virginia company and they will sail on the mayflower in 1620 and end up in New England. William will get this charter. Without it they can't get land or establish a gov. so it's critical they get the charter. Pilgrims will enter Mayflower compact before they got off the boat.
28
John Smith
John Smith steps in and takes over Jamestown to establish order because it's that bad. There was men fighting with men, people refusing to do work, and orders from england that were ignored. John Smith saves the colony. He's a no nonsense guy from the military so he's hardcore about it. He ruled almost like a tyrant to get things going in Jamestown. He will start to trade with the Indians which was originally not permitted. If they couldn't trade with the indians, they couldn't eat. They have 4 hour work days. Negotiated a new charter with James the 1st in 1609. Probs will continue to plague Jamestown. The joint stock company is putting in pressure for gold.
29
John Locke
Treaty of gov. He has a diff perspective than Hobbes. It starts at the beginning. He believes most human beings are good and if they're left alone we will naturally rationalize and use logic to reach appropriate conclusions. He says we are a product of our environment. We come into the world in a "clean slate." Your environment can impact you in how you react and behave. The bottom line is that man is not evil. Hobbes would have said greedy grubbies. Locke says we're naturally rational, not greedy or selfish. He agrees with Hobbes that the state of nature is not a good place. A place with no government is not good. Says we should enter into a contract to form a government to form a government to protect lives, liberty, and property.
30
Federalists
for the constit
31
Anti-Federalists
Vs the constit. Got bill of rights added
32
Shays Rebellion
Farmers will attack their local courthouse. Picked up their guns and go to courthouse where their mortages were being foreclosed. IN massachusetts. Went to courthouse to burn it down and destroy the records of their mortages. They believed it would be the solution to their probs. They're also disgusted with the state gov and their inability to manage their debt. Rich people hired an army to take care of the revo. gov had no milit. *Shay's rebellion and newburgh conspiracy symbolized probs of the articles of confed. fear of gov that is unable to respond to crisis. they made it so weak the gov couldn't do shit. as a result more people became supportive of reform.
33
Northwest Ordinance
There is one major accomplishment- northwest ordinance to deal with territs west of app mounts. Divided those lands into territs. Each one had governor, judges, and an assembly of male property owners. Settlers will be allowed a bill of rights guaranteeing them the same natural rights as all the states. Ex: they will have trial of jury, freedom of relig, due process of law. THough they're not an official state they have those things. Despite the success with the northwest ordiance, the articles of confed have to deal with failure b/c the gov could not regulate trade or raise taxes. This huge debt grew w/o their ability to tax and standardize their currency
34
Newburgh Conspiracy
Big time milit leaders in the Amer Revo came up with plan b/c they weren't getting paid for their services. Washington was going to prevent a takeover. He steps forward and gives a speech. He persuades these leaders to pull out their troops, to stop their treasonist behavior against the new nations, to settle down, and work out their probs. B/c Washington was so respected, he settles down things but the Newburgh Conspiracy spreads fear of revolt. We will hear demands for reforms over the inability to tax, pay soldiers, regulate trade, stable currency.
35
Articles of Confed.
They will send a congress and committee to get together to write shit up to control colonists during the revo. Leading polit minds all proposed their own unique ideas and plans. Ex: Albany plans, virginia plan, etc. All states should stay independent. Independent powers within themselves so they have power to watchdog other states so states won't gang up on other states. It would balance things out b/c there's this deep fear of polit corruption and powerful fed. gov.  There will be one unicameral body where each state has one vote. Regardless of pop and geographic size there's only going to be one vote. A state could send up to seven delegates to this congress but they would vote as one.  Does not allow for an indep exec. Congress is limited in what it can do. It can not tax the states but can request funds. It is also unable to control the northwest territ west of the app mounts-michigan, ohio, indiana, illiniois, wisconsin, and minnesota. This body cannot regulate trade across state borders or with other countries.  Weak fed gov over a coalition of states. barely overseeing or able to control this joining of states together into one. led to failure. *Weak fed gov, inability to tax, and not able to regulate trade is what should be associated with the articles of confed and a unicameral sys. Comes from colonial concern and experiences but fails miserably.
36
John Adams
Abigail's husband
37
James Madison
James madison, most important polit thinker of this time will write the federalist papers. Proposed that these factions might be a good thing. It may be the ultimate way to provide a sys of checks and balances to neutralize self interest. Nobody's ever going to get what they want and can't abuse people so it would force us to all compromise. Says factions would be good. Faction ex: polit parties- repubs, demos, interest groups (people who go to Washington to lobby). As the fed papers are coming out, defending a more powerful fed sys, shay's rebellion will break out
38
Philadelphia Convention
George Washington oversaw philly convention. he decides they will meet in secrecy. nobody outside would know what was going on within so our constit was born in secrecy.  1787
39
Olive Branch Petition
the colonies will draft the olive branch petition, 1775. the purpose was to promote peace and loyalty to the king. says we did what we did is not b/c of the king but b/c of parliament. We will stop fighting if you acknowledge the authority of the colonial assemblies. give us back the control of our futures in the colonies. the king refused and is fed up with these ill behaved children. instead of calling them disobedient children he now refers to them as traitors and rebels, a clear shift in language and a clear shift in the way he's going to see them
