  • Frederick Ashton = influence of ballets with narratives, and clear characterisation or each character
  • Bourne first saw his choreography when he was 30
  • influenced by Ashton’s use of individual moment motifs which help create clear and memorable characters

=this is very important to Bourne’s works as they are all narrative and family friendly, therefore portrayal of each character clearly is absolutely necessary

  • MGM musicals = these were made for screen visually as consisted of vibrant, colourful, glamorous sets and costumes and lighting. An example is the Wizard of Oz
  • captures the Hollywood glamour
  • over exaggerated facial expressions help to tell the story to an audience

=very important to Bourne as his works are so eye catching and visually engaging, yet again helping them to appeal to a wider range of people and makes them more memorable

  • Alfred Hitchcock = was a film director for psychological thrillers
  • his films were always complete pieces of entertainment due to the excitement, humour and cinematic approach
  • again use of extreme facial expressions
  • often used story boards= helped Bourne to develop plot of dance piece

=important influence as his films inspired quite a lot of characters e.g the swans in Swan Lake and Bourne made sure to make his works engaging in multiple ways

  • Fred Astaire = A famous dancer and performer on screen. His dance style was extremely fluid and showed a real ease of movement
  • his fluid style often combined ballet, tap and ballroom
  • dancing was largely improvised which created the effortless ease of movement

=important to Bourne as he formally studied Fred Astaire as a 3rd year BA student, which provided him with a deep insight into his dance style. The seamless blend of styles can be seen in Bourne’s works most commonly as a blend of ballet and contemporary

=important to Bourne as he found her style of free dance exciting and inspiring, and this natural pedestrian movements are used frequently to also portray characters
