Structure of DNA Flashcards
What is the DNA Molecule comprised of?
The DNA molecule is
comprised of two chains of
nucleotides.
How is the genetic code made up and what is it used for
The base sequence forms the
genetic code.
Much of this code is used to
create proteins.
What are anti Parallel strands?
The double helix is described as having two anti-parallel chains of nucleotide because one side goes from 5’ to 3’ and the opposite side goes from 3’ to 5’.
What is the Double Helix
The chains of nucleotide are joined together by
the bases which are joined by hydrogen bonds, which twists to form a double helix structure.
What are the bases described as and what ones are there?
These bases are described as
being complementary to each
other. This means their shapes
match up.
Adenine always joins to
Thymine
Cytosine always joins with
Guanine
The bases are joined by
hydrogen bonds.
Sugar Phosphate Bond
Nucleotides in a chain are joined together by sugar-phosphate bond to make the sugar-phosphate backbone of the DNA molecule.
From carbon 3 of one sugars to
the phosphate of the next.
