A

Protect the life and wellbeing of every victim

Take the needs and views of the victim into account given the sensitivity of the issues and the potencial impact such serious offending can cause a victim

Every report will recieve a consistent response

Every reported case will be investigated thoroughly

Every person who is a victim or potencial victim will receive protection and safety advice and be offered a referral to a relevant support service

What is female genital mutilation?

A

All procedures involving the partial or total removal of the female external genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non medical reasons.

E.g. symbolic jabs/peircings, removing/narrowing of vaginal opening.

Also known as female circomcision, cutting, sunna

Child abuse in UK. Human rights violation.

What are the signs a girl may be at risk of FGM?

A

Knowing that she belongs to a community in which it is practiced

Preparing a child to take on holiday

Arranging vaccinations or planning absence from school

The child may talk about a “special procedure” taking place

Indicators its already happened:

Prolonged absence from school with noticable behavioral changes on return

Child may spend long periods away from class or other activites - possibly with bladder or menstrual problems

Prohabition of Female Genital Mutilation (Scotland) Act 2005 makes FGM and offence. What does the act say?

A

“A person who performs an action in relation to the whole or any part of the labia majora, labia minora, prepuce of the clitoris, clitoris or vagina of another person is guilty of an offence”

What does Police Scotland define forced marriage as?

A

“A forced marriage is a marriage in which ONE OR BOTH parties DO NOT (or in the case of some adults with learning of physical disabilities) CONSENT to the marriage and duress is involved.

Duress includes both PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL PRESSURE. It is very differant from arranged marriage, where both parties give their full and free consent to the marriage”

A

Description of victim

Photos of victim + prints + dna. No legal basis for this so only with consent. Record on VPD

School attended

Details of immigration status

Passport number + copy of passport. If 2 passports encourage them to use british one

NI number

Drivers licence details

List of vehicles used by fam and suspects

Details + addresses of extended family

Details of any proposed forced marriage including name and location of spouse

Any travel itinerary including return date

Info in relation to risk identification

Consider safekeeping of passport as additional safety meaure (with consent)

What is the once chance rule in relation to HBA and FM?

A

You may only have ONE CHANCE to save a life.

DO:
•Take them seriously 
•See them immediately and alone
•Respect their wishes and reassure them
•Establish a means of safe contact
DONT
•Send them away/minimise their concerns
•Approach family or community (interpreters)
•Share info without consent
•Attempt to mediate
