Chap 6 Flashcards
What are the criteria to consider in the recovery of a memory ?
- Age of the complainant at the time of alleged abuse
- techniques used to recover the memory
- similarities of reports across interview sessions
- motivation for recall
- Time since alleged abuse occurred
Define a relative and absolute judgment
Relative: must compare lineup members and choose which individuals look most like the perp
Absolute: from these individuals, they then must choose if any of them are the perp
- children cannot make accurate absolute judgements
What are the implications of target-present, absent and sequential lineups ?
Target present: relative judgments have a fair accuracy
Target absent: increase in false-positive identifications
Sequential: increase in false-positive identifications
In assessing competency what 2 things does Bill C-2 recognize ?
- the child must be able to communicate the evidence
2. Be able to understand the difference between a lie and the truth
What are the 4 kinds of child maltreatment ?
- Neglect
- sexual
- Physical
- Emotional
What are some known risk factors for child maltreatment ?
Physical abuse: young maternal age, single parent status, spousal assault, substance abuse
Sexual abuse: child living with no biological parent, poor child-parent relationship, presence of a step-father
What are 3 factors about recall memory in children?
- accuracy increases with age
- older children remember more interior features than younger children (more detail)
- Have difficulty estimating age, weight and height
What are 2 ways that may increase free-recall ?
- Practice recalling a specific event before the interview
2. Providing feedback to the child
Why are children more suggestible ?
- Social compliance
- Changes to the cognitive system
- less developed memory encoding, storing and retrieving systems
- more forgetful and less retentive
- misattribution of information
What is the criterion based content analysis ?
they assess sexual abuse allegations in 4 steps:
- case-file analysis
- structured interview
- systematic analysis of the interview content
- application of a statement validity checklist
Limitations to CBCA are
- inconsistencies in the criteria of truthfulness
- different decision rules for reaching a conclusion
- can be influence by age or time of the event
