- Fear of Spanish control due to Mary’s marriage with Philip
- To prevent England from becoming catholic
- wanted to put Elizabeth on the throne and marry her to the protestant Edward Courtnaey
Who was the rebellion lead by
Sir Thomas Wyatt from Kent, Sir Peter Carew from Devon, Sir James Croft from Herefordshire, Duke of Suffolk from Leicestershire
What was the plan
The plan was for three rebellions to take place in separate parts of the country
They would occur at the same time - in the Midlands, the West Country and Kent
The plans was that the government would not know which one to put down first and the rebellion would blossom
How did it play out
The plan failed due to imperial ambassador Simon Renard had heard rumours that such a plot existed and informed the Lord Chancellor - Lord Chancellor Gardner brought in Courtenay for questioning
There was too few supporters in the midlands for success
Loyalty to Mary was precedent although they where rebelling against her
Wyatt succeeded in raising an army in Kent of about in Kent of about 4,000 men and his proximity to London worried the government
The Duke of Norfolk was sent to deal with Wyatt and 500 government troops deserted him
Wyatt was captured and sent to the Tower of London
Mary ordered that the offenders should be harshly dealt with. However not all of her advisor shared this view

The Wyatt Rebellion, or Wyatt Revolt, was an uprising that took place in England in 1554, named after its leader, Thomas Wyatt the Younger.
The rebellion arose from the determination of Queen Mary I to take Philip of Spain for a husband.
This choice of a foreign marriage was unpopular among the English.
