11.2 Study Guide Flashcards
(9 cards)
Photosynthesis
plants and other organisms convert light energy into chemical energy using carbon dioxide and water to produce oxygen and glucose.
photosynthesis equation
6CO2 + 6H2O = C6H12O6 + 6O2
nitrogen fixation
nitrogen fixed into other forms
takes atmospheric oxygen into ammonia and ammonium.
nitrification
ammonia and ammonium are oxidized into nitrate and nitrite
denitrification
converts nitrates and nitrites back into atmospheric nitrogen.
cellular respiration
process where cells extract energy from glucose and other nutrients to power cellular activities
cellular respiration equation
6 CO2 (carbon dioxide) + 12 H2O (water) + light —> C6H12O6 (glucose) + 6 H2O (water) + 6 O2 (oxygen)2
What type of organisms perform the processes of photosynthesis and cellular respiration
Both photosynthesis and cellular respiration are performed by plants, certain algae, and some bacteria like cyanobacteria. Plants and algae are capable of both processes, while some bacteria only perform photosynthesis or cellular respiration.
