Drugs affecting RAAS Flashcards

1
Q

What are the adverse effects of ACE Inhibitors?

A

COUGH is a main one
reactions related to vasodilation/alterations in blood flow
reflex tachycardia, hypotension, renal insufficiency, dizziness, fatigue, erectile dysfunction, pancytopenia, GI irritation, rash, hyperkalemia, cough

Q

Action

ACE Inhibitors
Angiotensin converting enzyme

A

Blocks ACE from converting angiotensin I to Angiotensin II in the RAAS.
Blocks aldosterone leading to vasodilation, sodium, and water excretion and small increase in serum potassium.

Q

Action

Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers (ARB’s)

A

Antagonist

  • blocks angiotensin II from binding with the receptors on the vascular smooth muscle and in the adrenal cortex
  • prevents vasoconstriction
  • prevents release of aldosterone

Q

What are angiotensin II receptors?

A

specific receptors found in the blood vessels and in the adrenal gland that react with angiotensin II to cause vasoconstriction and release of aldosterone
(opposite of angiotension II receptor blockers)
