To project her image of royal authority
What was a royal progress?
A method used by the queen to gain popularity by touring the countryside and staying with nobles
Who were Elizabeth’s chief courtiers?
William Cecil Robert Dudley (Earl of Leicester) Sir Christopher Hatton Sir Walter Raleigh Sir Francis Walsingham
What is patronage?
When Elizabeth would hand out land or positions in court to retain support
What is the privy council?
A body of advisers and ministers appointed by Elizabeth to help her rule
What was a Lord lieutenant?
A wealthy landowner who’s job was to keep Elizabeth informed of what was going on in their county. There was one per county.
What was a Sheriff?
Someone in charge of the collection of taxes, delivering prisoners to court and appointing then swearing in juries.
What was a Justice of the Peace (JPs)?
Wealthy gentlemen who had the unpaid job of maintaining law and order. They administered the poor law relief and justice for minor crimes. They numbered 30-60 per county.
What was a parish constable?
A tradesman or farmer who prevented poaching and looked out for vagabonds.
What was a night watchman?
Someone who patrolled the streets at night looking for criminals
What was an overseer of the poor?
They collected local tax and distributed it to the poor
What were the two bodies of parliament?
The House of Lords (non elected body of 100 lords, bishops and judges)
The House of Commons (450 members of parliament (MPs) who were elected by wealthy land owners)
Three reasons Elizabeth called Parliament
Elizabeth was short on money and needed taxes to be raised to be handed over the crown
Elizabeth needed to pass Acts of Parliament
Elizabeth needed support and advice
