  2. To defend the body against infection. It does this by:
    - Filtering micro-organisms in lymph nodes.
    - Maturing and storing lymphocytes.
    - Destroying micro-organisms by engulfing and digesting them or by antibody production.
  3. To absorb and transport fats in the digestive system.
