Cylinders Flashcards

1
Q

As soon as a cylinder is discovered at a fire, regardless of the contents, ICs should

A

extinguish any fire affecting the cylinder and apply a cooling spray directly onto any affected cylinders. This will immediately begin to restore the tensile strength of the cylinder and reduce the likelihood of cylinder failure.

Q

Crews on discovering a cylinder involoved in a fire will

A

Crews should tie off branches set on cooling spray and then withdraw. Where crews are unable to tie off branches, the use of ground monitors should be considered by the IC.

Q

If following a risk assessment the IC can determine that all of the following can be established:
(i)
The fire has been extinguished.
(ii)
The cylinder(s) are definitely not acetylene.
(iii)
All the cylinder(s) present have been located.
(iv)
The cylinders involved are receiving direct cooling.

A

no immediate danger of failing and it is NOT necessary to implement a 200m hazard zone. Following a risk assessment, only a cordon around the incident sufficient to maintain a safe system of work (SSOW) is required

If following a risk assessment the IC cannot determine that all of the following can be established: But it is definatley not Acetylene

(iii)
All the cylinder(s) present have been located.
(iv)

A

the IC should consider implementing a HZ of 200m

Q

Can crews work in the Hazard Zone non Acetylene

and requirements

A

A HZ is not an exclusion zone; crews may work in this area following a risk assessment by the IC.

When working within the HZ crews must work behind substantial cover where available and be wearing firefighting PPE (fire kit, fire hood, gloves

6
Q

When MUST the IC implement a 200m Hazard zone

A

If the cylinder(s) has been identified as acetylene, or if the IC either suspects that the cylinder may be acetylene or cannot determine the cylinder contents

Q

Can crews work in Hazard Zone Acetylene cylinder

requirements

A

Crews should continue to cool the affected cylinder(s) but should only work within the HZ following a risk assessment by the IC in conjunction with the HMEPO
(crews should wear full firefighting PPE (BA, fire kit, fire hood, gloves

Q

The Acetylene CAP is

A

STOW

Stop the application of cooling water after one hour:

Monitor the cylinder with a Thermal imaging camera (TIC) and record temperature.

Observe for any violent steaming* or rapid drying out of the cylinder surface.

Leave cooling water off for 15 minutes

When a Hazard zone set up what messsage

detail the perimeter roads that have been closed ( all roads bounded by…)
identifying a RVP and marshalling area for oncoming appliances
So appliances dont drive thru HZ

Q

Cylinders other than acetylene may be considered safe,

A

once they have been cooled, assessed with a thermal image camera (TIC) and a check to establish that the cylinder is not leaking. Water cooling need only be applied until the cylinder has been returned to ambient temperature.

Q

Cylinders contain gases which pose many and varied risks such as being flammable, toxic, corrosive or asphyxiant. Cylinders which are found to be leaking should be treated

Q

Example of a cylinder incident hazard zone

A

“From …………… at …………; cylinder procedure being implemented, 200m exclusion zone established; all roads and railway lines bounded by Union Street, Blackfriars Road, Webber Street, and Southwark Bridge Road, are within the exclusion zone; tactical mode Delta”.
