MSM evaluation Flashcards

1
Q

What supporting evidence for the MSM is there from a case study?

A

Clive Wearing - received brain damage to hippocampus due to viral infection. Could still use his STM - remember for around 20 seconds then forget. Couldn’t make new memories - damaged LTM. Shows distinct diff. stores and inability to rehearse info = forgetting.

Q

What scientific supporting evidence is there for the MSM?

A
Brain scans (fMRI) have been used to investigate brain activity and found that the prefrontal cortex in active during STM tasks while the hippocampus active during LTM tasks.
Shows distinct diff. stores.

Q

What is the issue w/ the MSM in terms of rehearsal?

A

According to the MSM the only way to transfer info from STM to LTM is through rehearsal. This transfer is not v. effective and often does not happen in this way.
Craik and Watkins found type of rehearsal is more important than amount.

Q

Why is the WMM better than the MSM?

A

It can explain why some brain injury ps have intact STM for visual but not verbal and vice versa. KF suffered brain damage from a motorcycle accident that damaged his STM. Impairment mainly verbal while visual largely unaffected.
MSM cannot account for this.
