Changing role in gov and society + Originally acted as spokesmen in negotiations w/ the crown in uprisings eg 1497 Cornish Risings

S - extension of gov into localities allowed yeomen to take on roles e.g administration of poor law and became part of Tudor political system - more inclined to defend than attack

  • More likely to use legal system to resolve than result to uprising
  • Northern Earls Revolt 1569 no more serious disputes - enjoying a period of social and economic stability
  • Economic ciris of 1590s no mass uprisings - attempt in Oxford 1596 led by the poorest none of the yeomen rank (originally leaders) are now part of the Elizabethan gov stsyem
