Purposes: to promote economic cooperation among European countries and hence avoid conflicts

The European debt crisis and the refugee crisis –> separatist crisis (分離主義) in recent years as the member states

The UK referendum for withdrawal from the EU also caused turmoil in the union. Britain voted to leave the EU in 2016 and officially left the trading bloc - its nearest and biggest trading partner.

currently has 10 members including Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Malaysia,
the Philippines, Indonesia, and Singapore ==> mainly consists of developing
countries

Shared interest: Rapid economic development and the improvement of living
standards

Follows the principle of not intervening in member states’ politics, territory,
and sovereignty.

Purpose: strengthen cooperation in spheres such as the economy and
environmental protection, and pursue the development of peace and
economy within the region
