Q

How do dolphins and bats use ultrasound?

A

They make ultrasound waves which reflect by things around them and the animal listens for the echoes, this tells them the location of the object which the wave bounced off.

Q

How are sonar equipment in boats used?

A

A loudspeaker on the ship emits a pulse of ultrasound. This spreads out through the water and some of it is reflected by the sea bed. A special microphone on the ship detects the echo.

Q

The speed of sound in sea water is 1500 m/s. The sonar equipment on a boat receives an echo 0.01s after the ultrasound pulse was sent out. What is the distance between the boat and the sea bed?

A

Distance = speed x time = 1500m/s x 0.01s = 15m
