the multi store model of memory Flashcards

1
Q

sensory register

A

where information is held at each senses - eyes ears nose fingers.
capacity is very large. Constantly receiving information, but receives no attention

A

if persons attention is focused on sensory stores then datas transferred to stm, first step in remembering something

Q

STM

A

used for immediate tasks, eg directions to friends house.
HAS LIMITED DURATION can disappear quickly if not rehearsed.
Info can also disappear from STM if new information enters STM, this pushes out original STM. CAUSE STM HAS LIMITED CAPACITY

Q

maintenance rehearsal

A

repeating info keeps info in STM but such repetition can create long term memory. ATKINSON AND ATKINSON proposed direct relationship between rehearsal in STM and strength of LTM.

retrieval

A

process of getting info from LTM involves infor passing back through STM

Q

a03 strength

A

there’s supporting evidence
brain scans, demonstrated that there’s a dfiiference between STM and LTM. beardsley found that cortex is active during brain scanning.

9
Q

limitation

A

multi store is too simple
shows that STM is divided into number of capacity and duration
msm is overly simplistic
