Science Of Healing The Heart

In a Surprise, temporary device provides a long term cure

A

The Left-Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD), a mechanical pump invested as a temporary life support for patients with advanced heary failure, is emerging as a potential tool to help hearts heal and function for the long term.

Congestive heart failure is characterized by an enlarged hear which loses its ability to effectiely propel blood to the resy of the body.

When the LVAD is implanted in a patient with heart failure, the enlarged heart shrinks in a process doctors call reverse remodeling.

Risks: infection, stroke, batteries that need to be changed and recharged frequently. Doesn’t work for patients whose heart failure is caused by heart attack. Tissue too far damaged already.
