Q

What is the technology and market linking matrix and describe it

A

This is a 2x2 matrix that has emphasis on need linking on the y-axis and emphasis on technical linking on the x-axis
TL: Weak linking of poor innovation and low need
TR: Highly technological but a lack of need so Technology push
BL: a high emphasis on need but low technical linking so market pull
BR: Strong linking of need and technology which means good innovation potential

Q

What does the Roy Rothwell Coupling model tell us

A

That due to the rapid rate of technology and market change this product-consumer need linking needs to take place at every stage of production to make sure the product still matches with the consumer needs

Q

What is need and technical linking

A

Its looking at how strong the link between a consumer and a new product or service is. If the link is strong then the consumer will need the product

Q

what is the cupcake approach

A

A fail fast philosophy
-This is about getting a product prototype to market in a fast, cheap and small scale way to see how it flies from immediate customer response

12
Q

What is the downside and upside of the cupcake approach

A

upside: Cheap, fast, small scale, provide very useful information on the market
Downside: The prototype must be of good enough quality to not just see a tacky product, competitors can see the product

Q

Explain a technology strategy starting from the commercial perspective:

A

ISAEP
I - Identify a need/gap
S - select the best technology roadmap to overcome the technical gap
A - Acquire the technology to over come the gap
E - Exploit the technology to gain as much value from it as possible
P - Protect the technological solution with patents
- This circles back since technology quickly becomes outdated and needs replacing to stay competitive

16
Q

Why is the technology strategy model circular?

A
  • Because technology quickly becomes slow and outdated compared to competitors, so in order to stay competitive, organisations must regularly update/replace old technological methods and processes.
17
Q

What is a technology roadmap?

A
  • A flexible planning technique to support strategic and long range planning, by matching short-term and long term goals with specific technology solutions
    or
The technologies required to realise a product
18
Q

What is a key element of a roadmap that defines it from a list

A
  • A roadmap considers how steps effect and interact with each other rather than just listing the steps needed
19
Q

What is a product roadmap

A

The full business side of bringing a product to market.

20
Q

Describe a strategic roadmap

A

This is the entire strategy of running a business which includes many technology roadmaps and product roadmaps required to bring products to market and also find technological solutions to enable this

21
Q

How does teh product and technology roadmap interlink

A

Product roadmaps define a timeline and steps to realise a product while a technology roadmap will define the timeline to develop teh technologies to realise the product.
Therefore there may be multiple technology roadmaps in a product roadmap

22
Q

What are the 3 uses of Technology roadmaps?

A

1) It can develop a good understanding of the needs and the technologies required to satisfy those needs
2) It provides a general timeline to help experts forecast technology developments in specific areas
3) It can framework a plan and coordinate technology developments both within a company or industry

23
Q

How can Tech road maps build brand loyalty?

A
  • TRMs can be used by companies to advertise the fact that they understand the customer needs and are developing technologies to meet them
24
Q

What are the 3 phases of Technology road maps?

A

1) Planning the roadmap
2) Developing the roadmap
3) Following through

25
Q

What is required in the planning of a technology roadmap?

A

1) must have the demands that teh technology needs to meet
2) Leadership and sponsorship to make the roadmap possible
3) Define the scope and boundary of the roadmap

26
Q

What is required in the development stage of the technology roadmap?

A

1) Identify the technological solution that needs to be made
2) Identify the specification of the technology and the targets
3) Specify the major technology areas involved in the solution
4) Identify all solutions and time lines to see if theres a cheaper or faster alternative
5) recommend the best solution
6) Create the roadmap report

27
Q

What is required in the follow through stage of a technology roadmap?

A

1) tweak it through constant critique and validation from a wider group
2) Develop an implementation plan of steps to deligate to workers
3) Review and update every week or so
