What are neurons?
Specialized cells of the nervous system that receive and transmit neurons.
What are neurons made up of?
Dendrites and axons?
What are dendrites?
Small branches of a neuron that receives information from neighbouring cells.
What are axons?
Long extensions of a neurons cell body that transmits information to neighbouring cells.
What is the myelin sheath?
An insulating layer, or sheath that forms around nerves.
What is the central nervous system made up of?
Brain and spinal cord.
How many sections is the brain divided into?
Three.
What does the cerebrum control?
Moving, thinking, and interpreting the five senses.
What does the cerebellum control?
Motor movement coordination, balance, equilibrium and muscle tone.
What does the medulla control?
Breathing, digestion, and heart function.
What two types of neurons make up the peripheral nervous system?
Sensory and motor nerves.
What do sensory neurons do?
Carry information from the body to the central nervous system.
What do motor neurons do?
Carry information from the central nervous system to the muscles or other organs,
What does the somatic nervous system do?
Respond voluntarily to stimuli such as turning your head when you hear a loud noise.
What does the autonomic nervous system do?
Responds to stimuli without you thinking about it, such as breathing and blinking.
