Q

How does Carlen’s idea of the two deals explain why women commit more crime?

A

Women have two deals: the gender deal which is that they are a good mother and wife they’ll be rewarded with happiness. And the class deal, if they work hard they will be financially rewarded in life

Carlen says of these break down women turn to crime. Class deal creates robbery, shoplifting and white collar crime. Gender deal creates murder, domestic and drug abuse.

Q

How can you criticise Alder’s liberation thesis in explaining why women commit more crime?

A

Despite these equalities women still commit far less crime than men. Also there is still the chivalry thesis, so female crimes sometimes arent recorded

17
Q

What are the two explanations as to why men commit more crime?

A

Winlow: Globalisation
Messerschmidt: Masculinity

18
Q

How does Winlows explanation of Globalisation explain the reason for why men commit more crime?

A

Globalisation led to decline in traditional male jobs in which many w/c men expressed their masculinity through. Men feel emasculated behind a desk and commit crime. Plus the rise in night time lesuire economy gives more opportunity for crime

19
Q

How can you criticise Winlows Globalisation theory of why men commit more crime?

A

Doesn’t explain why most men in ‘feminine’ jobs commit more crime and focuses too much on w/c crime

20
Q

How does Messerschimdt idea of masculity explain why men commit more crime?

A

Masculinity is an accomplishment that men constantly work at constructing, this is referred to as hegemonic masculinity

Crime and deviance is a resource that men may use to accomplish masculinity. E.g, kicking phone boxes to make you look macho or beating up another man

21
Q

How can you criticise Messerschimdt’s idea of masculinity to explain why men commit more crime?

A

We don’t live in the past, nowadays masculinity isn’t about strengths, it’s more flexible

Men commit crimes that are not necessarily masculine, e.g, tax evasion
