Q

what r longitudinal studies?

A

investigate behaviour for prolonged period of time; look for long term effects of computer games on aggression

Q

what’s a meta analysis?

A

4th methodology that brings together these 3 types to give overall judgement of the size of the violent media on aggressive behaviour

Q

what study did bartholow and Anderson do?

what took place in this experiment?

what were the findings?

A

lab based, experimental study

students played violent computer game or nonviolent game, for 10mins. they all carried out the Taylor competitive reaction time task, lab measure of aggression where students delivered blasts of white noise at chosen volumes to punish an opponent.

violent game- significant louder noise compared w nonviolent players

Q

what study did DeLisi conduct?

what did he look at?

what did he do?

what did he find?

what did researchers argue?

A

correlational study

227 juvenile offenders w history of aggressive behaviour ie hitting teacher, parent or gang fighting.

structured interviews to gather data on several measures of aggression and violent computer game-playing.

offenders aggressive behaviour was significantly correlated with how often they played violent computer games and how much they enjoyed them.

that the link is so well established that aggression should be considered a public health issue.

Q

what did Roberson study?

who did they study?

what did they find?

what did ppl most watching tv likely to get diagnoses w?

what did the study imply?

A

longitudinal study, looking to see if there was a link between excessive tv viewing in childhood and aggressive behaviour in adulthood.

1037 ppl born in New Zealand in 72/73 and measured their tv viewing hours at regular intervals up to the age of 26yrs.

watching Tv was a reliable predictor of aggressive behaviour in adulthood, measured in term of convictions for aggressive and non violent crimes.

antisocial personality disorder and be aggressive

that it didn’t matter if content was violent or not but aggressive behaviour is based on amount of TV watched

Q

what did Anderson et at perform?

what did they find?

what did the higher quality study show?

what do researcher claim in perspective?

what did analysis not show?

A

a meta analysis of 136 studies which included 3 types of methods previously outlined.

that exposure to violent computer games was associated w increase in aggressive behaviour, thoughts and feelings. finds were true for males n females across individualist and collectivist cultures.

a greater significant effect

effect of violent game on aggressive behaviour is greater than the effect of second hand smoke on cancer

indication that publication bias influenced results

Q

AO3❌✅

weakness of correlational study?

and a strength?

A

allow us to investigate realistic form of aggression, including violent crime. however, limitation is that there’s inability to draw cause n effect from conclusions. no variables r manipulated or controlled, n there is no random allocation of ppts to violent or nonviolent media conditions. due to this, direction of casualty can’t be settled by correlational studies.

Q

AO3✅❌

strength of longitudinal study?

and a weakness of it?

A

researchers use methodology to investigate changed in aggressive behaviour over time, so the dynamic nature of media influences in long term can be studied. this approach also views ppl as active consumers rather than passive recipients, which is a more realistic view of how ppl interact w media.

studying change over time leaves longitudinal studies vulnerable to effects of confounding variables. many other sources of aggression interact w media influences over a person of time ie role models in the form of friend n fam members. it becomes difficult to separate them all and assess their contribution to aggressive behaviour

Q

AO3✅❌

strength and weakness of experimental study?

A

strength is that they allow us to establish a casual link between media aggression nd aggressive behaviour.

a weakness is that bc its in a lab they can be seen as artificial and unrealistic, such as the Taylor competitive reaction time task which measured how loud noise is selected. of course it would be unethical to allow realistic forms of aggression in an experiment like letting ppl hit each other, so researchers have no choice but to be creative in devising ways of measuring aggression.
they also don’t involve any rear of retaliation therefore it can also be seen as unrealistic. in the real world ppl can retaliate but the experimenter gives the ppt implied permission to be safely aggressive
