Enjambment and ceasura and lines of uneven length. Creates an irregular rhythm which might mirror the soldier struggling in the mud .
The soldier could be any one , a universal figure

Starts in in medias red and covers the soldiers movements. First stanza - instinct , second stanza - thinking about his situation in the final stanza he gives up his thoughts and ideals and seems to have lost his humanity
