Organisation Flashcards
Principles of organisation: what are the basic building blocks of all living organisms
Cells
How many cells are unicellular cells made of and how many cells are multicellular cells made of
Unicellular cells are made made of one cell and multicellular are made of a group of cells
List everything in the human digestive system
Mouth- where food enters (where it starts)
Salivary glands - produces saliva containing amylase
Oesophagus- moves ingested food to the stomach
Stomach - Muscular organ where digestion continues
Pancreas (produces digestive enzymes),liver: (produces bile),
Name the two intestines
Small intestine - where digested food is absorbed
Large intestine - where water is absorbed
What are the 4 major food tests
Benedict’s test - tests for glucose
Iodine test - tests for starch
Biuret test - tests for protein
Ethanol test - tests for fat
What are the 3 types of enzymes
Salivary amylase - produced in salivary glands the substrate if it is starch
Protease - produced in the stomach, pancreas the substrate of it is proteins, the end product of it is amino acids
Lipase - produced in the pancreas the substrate of it is lipids the end products are fatty acids
Enzyme definition
Enzymes are biological catalysts that don’t get used up (they speed up reactions)
What is the basic understanding of the heart
The heart has 4 chambers (Right and left ventricle, right and left atrium), and it is a muscular pump that circulates blood around the body
What does the left part of the heart do
The left side of the heart only pumps oxygenated blood from the lungs to the rest of the body.
What does the right side of the heart do
The right side of the heart only pumps de-oxygenated blood towards the lungs so that it can pick up oxygen
What are the 3 plant tissues
- Epidermis
- palisade mesophyll
- spongy mesophyll
Plant organ system
Together, the roots, stem and leaves form a plant organ system for transporting and exchanging substances around the plant
