  1. Excessive daytime sleepiness
  2. Person experiences overwhelming wave of sleep and falls asleep
  3. Cataplexy - type 1 narcolepsy

Stage 1 - N1

A

Lightest level of sleep, lasts a few min. If awakened, people will feel like they were daydreaming

A

Relaxation progresses, person is still easily aroused, brain and muscle activity slow

A

Slow-wave sleep, deepest stage, sleeper is difficult to arouse, vital signs are lower

A

Vivid, full color dreaming, usually last 90 minutes and gets longer each cycle, rapid eye movement, very difficult to arouse sleeper
