L19-logical fallacies, models, oxygen tolerance Flashcards

1
Q

climate change effects

A

lack of study in may areas of the world
places we study may not be representative of other parts of the globe
may no represent future environment

Q

two types of models?

A
• Phenomenological models
– A function is used to describe an underlying biological process (often the function is based on empirical data)
• Mechanistic models
– Details of processes taking place at another level are
explicitly tracked (empirical data not required)

Q

strengths and and weakness of Phenomenological models?

A

is often very accurate
requires observations can’t answer questions about things that have not been observed eg. bee flying on another planet
should not extrapolate beyond data

Q

strengths and and Mechanistic of Phenomenological models?

A

can come to wrong conclusion if assumptions don’t apply e.g bumblebees can’t fly
can predict things that have not happened eg. flying on another planet(out of sample predictions)
useful for climate change

Q

Thermal performance

A

looks like a negatively skewed bell curve
varies with level of organisation
higher level organisation has narrower range of temperature

prokaryote better heat tolerance hyer than multicellur

Q

approach to studying effect of climate change

A

different ways of modelling

if we want to understand processes need to understand mechanism such as reproduction and growth

Q

warming effect on samon

A

samon that migrate further have better aerobic performance

performance match temps experiance

what is climate change effects temperature

Q

The decline effect

A

intially massive effect

then its small effect

actully its complicated

often difficult to replicate

happens cause we draw large conculsions on little data intially

Logical fallacies tone policing

A

have to be polite, don’t critize to much, “don’t confront collarberate”

Q

Logical fallacies slippery slope

A

If we don’t get behind a theory people will not take cliamte change seriously
