what was the protection Era about?
In the 1800s, there was a growing consciousness about the general mistreatment of Aboriginals and the reduction in their population which raised the need for change in policy.
Thus, new state legislations was created to appoint protectors (known as police or chief officer) in each district to protect the aboriginals from settlers’ abuse and to provide medicine, blanket etc
However, these legislations has limited success and instead extended state’s power over the livelihood of Aboriginal People which limited their movement, lost of wages sometimes, removal of children, and segregating them from non-aboriginals.

Although there may have been some good intention in creating these legislation, looking the from the lens of that era where the practice of slavery was very common around the world and people were subject to harsh conditions. However, from a modern lens the policies were about;
- controlling Aboriginals
- Slavery
- concentration camps

- Guarantees against repetition
